Welcome to AfroBrazil.
Brazil is home to the largest population of African people outside the continent of Africa. The African people brought their music, dance, languages, and religions; much of which survived in purer form in Brazil than in North America.
The Yoruba, Ewe, Nago and other peoples brought their beliefs from Africa to the New World. Their belief systems survived as living oral traditions and in rituals and music handed down from generation to generation. The Candomble' religion is the closest to the old West African practices and is still practiced in Brazil.
In Brazil you will find the largest assortment of African instruments in the Americas, each with its unique timbre. For instance, the music of the berimbau was used by slaves to disguise a dance for the deadly Angolan martial art of Capoeira. The music and dance Brazil is best known for, the samba, is also African. Contemporary African legacies in Brazil are part of its dynamic living culture.
AfroBrazil creates a unique opportunity for those who appreciate African history and culture, exploring the links between Brazil and Africa and African memory and culture in the Americas, with a special focus on music.
Africa is alive and well in Brazil !
